Automatic Win: Eliminating Manual Back Spotfacing Headaches

When one of our customers came to S&D with a manufacturing challenge, they were frustrated with a back spot facing process that was slow, labor-intensive, and causing unnecessary downtime.

The application required multiple holes to be back spotfaced using a traditional bayonet-style back spotface tool. While the process worked, it required constant operator involvement and repeated machine stoppages.

The Customer’s Existing Process

For every single hole, the operator had to:

  • Insert the bayonet tool through the hole
  • Stop the machine
  • Manually attach the back spotface cutter
  • Restart the machine and perform the cut
  • Stop the machine again
  • Manually remove the cutter
  • Withdraw the tool from the hole
  • Repeat the entire process for the next hole

The result:

  • Excessive machine downtime
  • Constant operator intervention
  • Increased cycle times
  • Reduced productivity
  • Tool breakage issues

The process had become inefficient, frustrating, and costly.

The S&D Solution

S&D partnered with HEULE Precision Tools to implement the HEULE BSF Automatic Back Spotfacing Tool, a fully automated solution designed specifically to eliminate manual intervention.

Even better, the required tool was in stock and available for immediate shipment, and HEULE’s technical team assisted with programming support to help automate the operation quickly and efficiently.

How the HEULE BSF Works

The new process became dramatically simpler and fully automated through a straightforward CNC program:

  1. Feed the tool through the hole.
  2. Start the spindle. The cutting blade automatically opens.
  3. Turn on coolant, if desired, and perform the cut.
  4. Retract from the surface and stop the spindle.
  5. Turn the coolant back on with the spindle stopped. The blade automatically closes.
  6. Move directly to the next hole.
  7. The entire process is controlled through a simple CNC program, with no manual intervention required.

That’s it.

No stopping the machine to attach tooling.
No stopping again to remove tooling.
No operator climbing in and out of the machine.
No unnecessary manual handling.

The Results

By switching to the HEULE BSF system, the customer achieved:

  • Significant cycle time reduction
  • Increased machine uptime
  • Improved operator safety
  • Better process consistency
  • Reduced operator fatigue
  • Elimination of unnecessary manual work
  • Reduced tooling failures and breakage

This was a clear productivity win.
